Genfinity recently held a podcast with Arrash Yasavolian, founder of Taoshi and TARVIS Labs, to discuss the ongoing developments of the Bittensor protocol and their efforts toward decentralized machine learning. You may have heard a “buzz” about this protocol and their token, $TAO. Read further for more exclusive information!
In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology, innovations continue to shape the future of decentralized machine learning. One such innovation garnering attention is TAO Bittensor. As the intersection of AI and blockchain expands, TAO Bittensor emerges as a pioneering platform, promising to revolutionize the way we create, distribute and profit from artificial intelligence.
Understanding TAO Bittensor’s Framework
TAO Bittensor operates on a unique framework, leveraging blockchain technology to create an ecosystem favorable for decentralized machine learning. At its core, TAO Bittensor enables the exchange of computational resources among participants, facilitating the training and execution of machine learning models in a decentralized manner. Moreover, through its consensus mechanism, TAO Bittensor ensures the integrity and security of data, fostering trust among participants within the network.
The protocol is a layer-0 technology, which is the foundation of a blockchain. It is also built upon the Polkadot substrate. The blockchain is responsible for upholding the consensus mechanism, validating peer identity, and motivating network participants. Additionally, the blockchain layer operates directly beneath the AI layer. Inter-process communication facilitates interaction between these two layers. To ensure equitable distribution of incentives among all participating peers, the Bittensor network employs a staked, weighted trust mechanism via consensus. Peers are encouraged to assess one another, with higher-ranked peers receiving additional rewards.
Notably, the blockchain disregards rankings from individual peers, instead relying on collective rankings from all participants. Peers must register their wallets and unique cryptographic keys to submit rankings and engage in communication with other peers. These keys serve as the primary identification method for peers within the network.
Consensus Mechanism
The consensus mechanism for the protocol is deemed “proof of intelligence”. This mechanism rewards those nodes that provide beneficial machine-learning models back to the network. The nodes must essentially execute machine learning tasks to highlight their level of intelligence. This is notably different from PoW and PoS consensus mechanisms that typically solve mathematical problems. Only the most intelligent nodes are more likely to be chosen to append a new block on the chain and receive rewards in the form of TAO tokens.

Diving Deeper with Arrash Yasavolian
Arrash described Bittensor’s incentivization to their miners. He stated that, unlike Bitcoin which gives their native tokens to miners to solve mathematical problems, Bittensor rewards on an individual, subnet level. He stated, “Every individual subnet defines their AI based problem via their domain. Whether it’s an LLM (Large Language Model), financial forecasting, or sports betting, it’s all AI-driven problem solving. Miners competing on each of these individual subnets are not just providing power and energy but actual intelligence back to the subnet to try and solve the problem for that domain for that subnet.”
Making an interesting point regarding the incentive overview, he stated:
“It’s all powered by this incentive protocol, which is incentivizing overall intelligence across all of the subnets.”
The future of decentralized machine learning is on Bittensor:
Genfinity dove deeper with Arrash, picking his brain on how Bittensor compares to current AI models and where he sees AI going in the future.
He stated that he considers many current chat models as centralized in nature. No one really knows how these individual AI’s are getting their information or how they function. Essentially, there is no transparency with centralized AI models.
Conversely, he believes TAO Bittensor’s decentralized machine learning model is the future, noting, “We’re seeing everyone — Big Tech — trying to lean into this direction. But the reality is, in my opinion, open source lives on Bittensor, and that’s where it’s gonna thrive. When we’re thinking AI, we want it to be open source, we want it to be generalized, and we don’t want it to lean in any specific direction.”
Because Bittensor is not specific to one subnet, or sector, it is open to solving problems for many industries.
How are TAO and Bittensor related?
The TAO token plays a crucial role within the Bittensor ecosystem, facilitating various functions and interactions among participants. Moreover, the TAO token serves as a means of incentivizing participants to contribute computational resources and participate in training tasks within the Bittensor network. Participants receive TAO tokens as rewards for their contributions, encouraging active engagement and collaboration within the ecosystem.
The total supply of Bittensor (TAO) is 21 million tokens, which is the same as the total supply of Bitcoin. This fixed total supply is designed to limit inflation and maintain the scarcity and value of the token over time. The distribution of TAO tokens is gradually released over time through mining rewards, staking rewards, and other initiatives. The tokens are used for governance, staking, and as a means of payment for accessing AI services and applications built on the Bittensor TAO network.
Moreover, with the technology gaining in popularity, the $TAO token has performed a 10X in price since October of 2023. It is currently available for purchase on KuCoin, Gate.io, Uniswap, and other exchanges.
Conclusion:
As the intersection of AI and blockchain continues to evolve, TAO Bittensor remains a beacon of innovation, driving the advancement of decentralized machine learning.
