Genfinity recently delved into the minds of cryptography’s brightest, interviewing experts from the xx foundation and xx network, champions of the privacy revolution. But what’s next for this innovative company? Who are they collaborating with, and what exciting developments are unfolding?
Keep reading below for all the details!
What is the xx network?
The xx network is a decentralized ecosystem that aims to provide a secure and efficient platform for communication and financial transactions. It combines a scalable blockchain with a privacy-protecting communications network. Here’s a breakdown of its key features:
- Blockchain: The xx network uses a nominated stake consensus protocol that is designed to be energy-efficient and quantum-resistant. This means that it can process a large number of transactions per second without using a lot of energy, and it is resistant to attacks from quantum computers.
- Communications network: The xx network uses a technology called cMix to protect the privacy of communications. cMix works by mixing together the messages of multiple users before sending them on their way. This makes it difficult for anyone to track who is sending messages to whom.
- Native token: The xx network has its own native token, called XX. XX can be used to pay for goods and services on the network, as well as to vote on governance proposals.
The xx network is still under development, but it has the potential to be a major player in the blockchain space. Its focus on privacy and scalability could make it attractive to users who are concerned about the security of their data and the speed of traditional financial systems.
The xx network foundation
The xx network foundation, governing body behind the xx network, oversees its development, growth, and adoption. They fund research, promote use cases, and support developers and users through grants, resources, and community initiatives. This foundation plays a key role in shaping the xx network’s future by driving its ongoing development and adoption.
Aaron emphasized that the foundation works alongside, “the most talented people in the world in the sphere of cryptography, software engineering, technology, and innovation.” The foundation was organized by the initial founders of the xx network right after the mainnet launch with the goal of increasing growth and global decentralization.
David Chaum
David Chaum, touted as the “godfather of cryptography”, is the xx network’s heart and soul. From founding and leading it, to shaping its vision as a privacy-focused haven, his fingerprints are on everything. His expertise in cryptography built the network’s core, and his long-term vision drives its evolution. As a vocal advocate for online privacy, he champions the xx network as a solution, actively involved in its development and governance. This is Chaum’s legacy: a decentralized ecosystem empowering individuals and protecting their privacy.

A fun fact we learned about David Chaum in our podcast is that he often gives his phone number while networking as an equation, highlighting his playful and deeply ingrained mathematical nature.
xx network and WorldCoin collaboration
Mario Yaketig, cryptographer for the network, detailed the xx network’s collaboration with the Worldcoin Foundation through three grant proposals. David Chaum, a cryptography expert, presented these proposals based on their prior work and its relevance to Worldcoin’s needs.
The first grant aims to anonymize the scanning of iris data used for Worldcoin access, addressing privacy concerns surrounding a single entity holding such information. The second grant focuses on a secure and user-friendly phone-based voting scheme, crucial for improving blockchain governance. Lastly, the third grant proposes an advanced encryption method allowing Worldcoin to maintain the iris database while protecting individual identities. These collaborations showcase the xx network’s contribution to privacy-enhancing solutions within the cryptocurrency space.
Anonymizing iris scans
Mario went into detail on our podcast, highlighting how the iris data will remain anonymous and secure. The xx network employs a unique, “perpetual mix” approach for anonymous identification. Inspired by existing mix networks, it stores encrypted iris codes in a constantly shuffled database. New codes are added and encrypted, then the entire list gets shuffled periodically. This ensures anonymity as past locations of individual codes become untraceable. The lightweight ELGamal re-encryption makes the system efficient and flexible, allowing for balancing privacy and latency based on specific needs.
When we asked him if this will run on cMix, he stated that it will be a separate mixed network called cMix plus, essentially a stripped-down version of cMix.
Other xx network developments
Project Tourbillon
As advisors to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), xx network tested a privacy-focused retail CBDC using real payment data. Project Tourbillion explored privacy, scalability, and quantum security. While each goal involved trade-offs, it successfully demonstrated the feasibility of a private CBDC with existing technologies. Mario emphasized that privacy in CBDCs is possible — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
The project’s groundbreaking work shattered the myth of impossible private CBDCs, proving its feasibility to both the public and banks. This achievement not only challenged the prevailing narrative, but also could potentially provide a valuable roadmap for other projects striving for similar privacy-focused CBDCs. Chaum’s deeper motivation likely stems from a concern for safeguarding individual privacy from potential harm, even when governments and banks act with good intentions. His work serves as a powerful reminder that privacy in digital finance is achievable.
SDK Library
Rick Carback, co-founder of xx network, confirmed working on the xx network SDK library, aiming to simplify the integration for developers. He’s creating libraries for iOS, Android, and also for web for easy integration with commands or configurations. These libraries include sophisticated features like encryption, post-quantum libraries, and messaging, accessible through a web assembly binary. This essentially allows developers to use powerful xx network features within their applications as if running them on a desktop.
The goal is to make XX network integration super easy for developers, especially on the web. They envision a simple “React component”, or HTML tag, for seamless integration. This would allow anyone, even non-programmers, to add privacy-preserving chatbots to their websites, receiving and responding to messages easily. Ultimately, they aim for a system with readily available widgets that simplify secure communication for everyone.
Rick emphasized the xx network prioritizing developer ease-of-use with widgets and simplified libraries, customization for different platforms (web vs. desktop) and interoperability across them remain crucial design considerations.
Echoexx
Bernie, an original xx network member and longtime friend of Mario, initially collaborated on cMix and the xx network blockchain launch. Now, with the xx SDK readily available, Bernie’s team is building echoexx, a new messaging app on the xx network. Unlike prior apps, echoexx is “more crypto native,” allowing users with wallets to message and send payments directly through the app, paving the way for exciting future features.
What’s exciting about this development is that you can log in with any wallet and message other wallets that reside within the app as well. Those messages are fully private with the same encryption that is available on the xx network. The company is going to work on the Ethereum chain first, testing the MetaMask wallet. Moreover, moving beyond 1:1 chats to group chats and moving onto other blockchains are a few future ideas for echoexx’s development.
Unlike other decentralized messaging protocols, xx network offers complete privacy protection at the base layer, preventing anyone from tracking messages or revealing user metadata. This crucial distinction sets xx messenger apart in the Web3 messaging landscape, where other platforms prioritize end-to-end encryption but lack true privacy at the base layer.
Closing Thoughts
In terms of xx network’s 2024 trajectory, Aaron emphasized overcoming past hurdles, witnessing renewed enthusiasm, and spearheading crucial advancements. They highlight the network’s expanding technology, thriving community, and the vital responsibility of safeguarding online privacy. Anticipation palpable, they promise a year packed with exciting developments, leaving listeners eager to buckle up for the ride.
The xx network, spearheaded by the legendary David Chaum, is poised to revolutionize privacy in the digital realm. From its secure blockchain and communications network to its developer-friendly SDK, xx network offers a comprehensive solution for building a future where privacy and security go hand-in-hand. As collaborations like those with Worldcoin Foundation demonstrate, xx network is actively shaping the future of secure communication and financial transactions.
